Now, crouching on the rooftop, Kenya’s hands stretched, then curled.

She hadn't taken the dagger.

Not even when Thorne had slid it under her door with a note that said, Crawling back into your hole?

She’d embedded the knife in his bedroom door in response.

Sometimes, she could swear those gloves were still on her hands. That she could still hear the Grimor's laugh. But none of it — none of it compared to the throne room.

She lived there, whenever the dust settled in her mind. And only restless fury had the power to pull her out.

Tell them how you set the Nightmares on them, just so you could bring them to the Bewarned. To me.

It wasn't the first time Kenya had wondered — how Lia and Vallum had formed that Ember. But she didn’t dwell on it, not when thinking of the Watchman at all brought a tidal wave of anger. Every time she caught a glimpse of him in that dark house, he scurried away, as if he feared for his life.

He probably should.

Oh, Death's greatest servant, we could bow before you.

The Grimor knew, just from rooting around in her head, that Death had always been her enemy.

Which was why it was so bitterly ironic, living under a Veil named after it.

The Death Veil. She'd learned more about it from Thorne, from conversations she'd heard perched on rain gutters. The Death Veil, they whispered. Created by the Queen.

Kenya hated Lia all the more for it.

The Death Veil was the reason that Mirlings were scarce — that they lived in pungent fear of the day their magic flared. Because when it did, their Shadows came sniffing. Circling. Transforming them into Miseries, monstrous versions of their former selves.

Kenya watched the Miseries wander, half-asleep. Parts of the city were abandoned, because of how many Miseries congregated there. Living there wasn't worth the risk of waking them.

And it was all because of the Death Veil. The Shadows.

On Luma, Kenya had learned of Sky Veils and Tethers. Every realm but her own had a Sky Veil — a layer of magic over the natural sky. And those who were born there, were Tethered to it — another reason they couldn’t create doors between realms.

The Night realm was no different. The sky was called the Death Veil, but instead of conjuring dreams and Nightmares, like Luma, it conjured something else.

Endless darkness… and Shadows.

And the worst part was, you didn’t even have to be Tethered to the Death Veil to have one.

Soon after Kenya had landed, a Shadow had been created for her — and it wasn't the outline drifting behind her in the dim lamplight.

It follows you, people whispered.

You'll know, the moment you hear its music, others whispered back.

The music of a servant of the Veil.

Most people never saw their Shadow, but they still lived in fear of it. They lived in fear of the day they heard the Shadow’s music in their ears, because it meant your end was coming.

Kenya had learned that even if you didn’t have Mir, if you didn’t conjure it — the Shadows could send monsters after you.
